DMF Grand Entrance, who we called Sophie, was the first broodmare that my dad and I purchased in the Spring of 2009 at a herd dispersal sale in Vermontville Michigan. She was in foal to TB Midnite Summers Dream and had a very splashy filly in 2010 called BFA Exotic Ducati (more on her later). We didn’t really realize what we had in terms of pedigree but in hindsight, this mare was very well bred (HVK Grand Entrance x HVK Clairvoyant). She was a product the Kohler Stables breeding program and was part of the Kohler Sale in 2004 where she and her mother (Sophie was only 3 months old) were sold to Dragonsmeade Morgan Horse Farm. HVK Clairvoyant became quite an asset for Dragonsmeade and produced some wonderful offspring, most notably Dragonsmeade Warlock.
Unfortunately, Sophie also introduced us to the struggles and heartaches of breeding horses. After her first foal by TB Midnite Summers Dream, we bred her to De LaRenta. She produced a stunning bay colt in 2011 but we ended up losing him to an infection. After this, we could no longer get Sophie pregnant again.
One the bright side, this was probably a good thing for us to endure. It taught us that breeding horses isn’t an easy endeavor and if we can persevere through this difficult time, there will be better days ahead.
