Way back in 2009 when I was a teenager, we were next door neighbors with Dennis at Romp N Play Stables and he would drive these beautiful Morgan horses past our house. That cemented what I already (sort of) knew. I wanted Morgan horses. I would randomly show up at Dennis’s barn and shoot the breeze while he worked horses and one day he asked if I wanted to purchase a weanling from him. Of course I wanted to! But first I had to convince my dad that this was a good idea. Surprisingly, dad was game (I think it was to keep me out of trouble). So as a weanling, HQ Prominent Pearl came to our farm.
Keep in mind, my dad and I knew absolutely nothing about Morgan horses or pedigree so this was a great learning experience. And it turns out, dad learned to love the Morgan breed as well! This filly was out of Harlan’s Radiant Prince (Tug Hill Whamunition x Nas Esperanza) and PT Queen of Denial (Bent Apple Northern Spy x Liberation Spirit Electra).
I owned her for a little over a year then sold her to a friend. This experience was extremely valuable and led my dad and I to seek better breeding stock and getting serious about the Morgan breed. In future articles, I’ll try to highlight some of the points in history that defined me and pushed me towards my goal of breeding quality Morgan horses.
